Sugarcane varieties coming up from IAC breeding program whose hybridization occurred in 1965 and 1966 were tested together with main commercial varieties including NA56-79 and IAC52-150 used as control. Experiments were planted in February-March, 1979, and harvested in August-September of 1980 (plant cane), 1981 (first ratoon) and 1982 (second ratoon) in three regions of São Paulo State: Santa Bárbara d'Oeste (Dark Red Latosol Soil), Serrana and Sales de Oliveira (Dusk Red Latosol). The experimental design was a randomised complete block with four replications. Dunnett's test was used to compare each variety mean with NA56-79 and IAC52-150. Considering sugar yield, the best varieties were CB45-155, IAC51-205 and IAC48-65, together with the control NA56-79 and the new variety IAC65-113. Superior sugar contents were showed by IAC52-150, NA56-79 and IAC58-480. Varieties IAC48-65, IAC51-205 and CB45-155 presented good sugar contents. IAC48-65 and NA56-79 had the lowest breakdowns in yield comparing plant cane with second ratoon harvests.
