SUMMARY

Strength, regularity, and number of neps were analysed in yarns produced by six different Paulista varieties of cotton.

The material was sampled in five regional variety tests, in the State of São Paulo, during the agricultural year of 1973-74. These tests compared IAC RM4-SM5, IAC 17, IAC 12-2, IAC 16, IAC RM3, and IAC 13-1. The yarns were spinned in a miniature plant. Strength, number of neps, and the regularity of them were determined by USTER analyser. Each test was analised individually and assembled in a combined analysis. The studied varieties showed significant differences as to yarn strength and number of neps. The IAC 16 variety showed a higher yarn strength and a higher number of neps. IAC 17 showed a lower yarn strength and less neps. There was no significant difference between varieties, as to yarn regularity.

Variety x place interaction was significant in the case of number of neps.
