Open-access Occurrence of Conidiobolus utbiculosus in Brazil

A phycomycete which has been identified as Conidiobolus utriculosus Bref. has been isolated from fruit bodies of Peziza sp. This seems to be the first reference on the occurrence of this fungus in Brazil. The conidiophores are erect, aereal, 12-16m in diameter, producing terminal co-nidia; the conidia are globose 20-46m, in diameter, with a basal papilla somewhat conical. They germinate to produce secondary and terciary conidia. Certain conidia can also produce mycelium giving rise to one or more hyphae, upon germination. In old cultures kept in the refrigerator spores characterized by thicker walls and provided with a hairy structure were found. These spores have been called chlamy-dospores or resting spores. Zygospores were not observed in cultures of the Brazilian fungus.
