Policies on surgical contraception are simultaneously linked to issues of public health, demography and sexuality, among others. In this article we conduct a comparative analysis of aspects of the availability of the female surgical contraception -among other techniques of birth control- which have been subject to political debate in Brazil and Argentina. The discussion is based on a literature review and, in the Argentine case, on findings of a recently concluded ethnography conducted the city of Buenos Aires. We analyze the policies and other issues addressed in the literature, shedding light on commonalities as well as divergences between both countries.
