Grey Isabella: a somatic mutation of the black isabella grape

J. S. Inglez de Sousa

SUMMARY

The Isabella grape is the most important variety of the Brazilian viticulture, specially in the vineyards of Rio Grande do Sul, where it represents more than 80% of the crop. The writer describes a new somatic mutation of the Isabella grape, occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the vineyard of Mr. Américo Boff, near the town of Anna Rech. Instead of black berries as the common Isabela has, the mutant presents pink-greyish colored ones. Canes, leaves, the dimensions and shape of the bunch, the time of ripening and taste of the grapes seem to be identical on both forms.

Grey Isabella has in the mentioned area, at least, five popular names: "americana cinza", "borbonha", "borgonha", "Isabel rosada" and "mulata". Its origin dates back to 12 years ago, when Américo Boff found among the vines of a vineyard of included in order to compare the fruits of the original Isabella with its grey colored sport.
