Studies on storage of snap bean seeds
Eduardo Zink
SUMMARY
Seeds of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), were stored for a period of 12 months under normal conditions at the Seed Laboratory of the Instituto Agronômico. These seeds, with three different initial moisture contents (12,4; 16,0 and 20,1%), were kept either in paper bags or sealed glass jars; part of the sample was treated with CS3 prior to packing. Periodical standard germination tests were used to evaluate the influence of these treatments on the viability of the seeds.
Storage in paper bags did not change the germinability of the seeds after one year, independently of initial moisture content and insecticide treatment. However, seeds kept in glass vials lost rapidly their germinability except when the initial moisture was low. CS2 treatment reduced further the percentage of germination of these seeds.
