Open-access SOCIAL TRAJECTORIES IN MIDDLE STRATA: FAMILY, SCHOOLING, AND WORK

Abstract

This article exams the family socialization, considering the mobilization, access and distribution of resources through kinship; and the learning practices developed within families, shaping the ways of seeing and acting in the world and guiding the individual expectation and behavior. I analyzed interviews conducted in Salvador to discuss kinship relationships, trajectories in educative institutions, experiences in labor market, and self-perceptions of class. This study focused on trajectories followed by investments that aim to project the individual beyond the limits of the domestic units. But the results of these investments are uncertain, like “bets”, because some factors, such as the absorption of workforce, are unpredictable.
